Published to accompany What Remains at The Women’s Art Collection, Murray Edwards College, this booklet explores the histories, ideas and artistic practices brought together in the exhibition. 

Marking forty years since the acquisition of Mary Kelly’s Extase (1986), this booklet brings together an introduction to the exhibition alongside texts and conversations on the themes explored in What Remains. It begins with Lucy Howie and Alina Khakoo’s account of Mary Kelly and the Artists-in-Residence Programme that ran at Kettle’s Yard throughout the 1980s, followed by a conversation between Kelly and Amy Tobin reflecting on the resulting work, Extase. Evelyn Whorrall-Campbell’s Radical Deviance: A Journal of Transgendered Politics considers the importance of grassroots publishing to the development of feminist and transgender art and politics in Britain, extending the exhibition’s exploration of the ways marginalised histories are carried forward.

The booklet concludes with reproductions and interpretations of the artworks included in What Remains. Together, these contributions document the history of Extase and its place within The Women’s Art Collection, while situating the works within the wider histories, conversations and practices that continue to shape the Collection.

Developed and wrote a series of zines about women artists that were stocked by Tate and other national bookshops. These evolved over the years and later became Common Threads Press. The series included Artemisia Gentileschi, Tarsila do Amaral, Pauline Boty, Amrita Sher-Gil, Women of the Bauhaus, LGBTQ Women Artists, concluding with ‘Women Artists and the Home’, fundraising for Solace Women’s Aid during the COVID-19 pandemic.
